Functional requirements describe what the system must do—its behavior and core functions. Non-functional requirements define how the system should operate: its characteristics such as performance, security, and reliability. For example, for an online bank: a functional requirement is "the user can transfer money"; a non-functional requirement is "the transfer must be completed in no more than 3 seconds."
